getting married abroad

So just how many wedding invitations do you send when getting married abroad?

From our latest poll nearly two thirds of you will be inviting 20+ guests to your big day, with just 25% opting for a smaller gathering of less than 10 friends and family.

The editor wasn’t sure whether or not to be surprised by the figures.

With many opting for an overseas wedding because of rising costs in the UK, making sure those near and dear are present to share the experience, means money saved is being spent elsewhere, so it will be a day to remember.

With so many all flying out, logistics with transport, rooms and any special requirements need careful planning and working with the wedding co-ordinator is a must so all those special guests are well catered for and looked after.

So whether large or small, from all of here at TLC UK, we hope your wedding exceeds your expectations.

Getting married abroad and gone over budget! What to do?

Well accordingly to our recent poll a resounding 2/3 of you would cut back on the length of the honeymoon rather than making cut backs to things like guest numbers, dress, food menu ... does that say something about us? The editor seems to think so.

The destination wedding is often the thing of dreams for many yet it would appear we are actually quite an unselfish bunch when all is said and done and rather than selling others short, we would make a personal cut back to ensure our family and guests get to really enjoy the experience and share the moment.

On a deeper level, maybe as humans we get more enjoyment sometimes making others happy and our recent poll reflects this?

Maybe you have a real life experience you would like to share with fellow readers of this blog site? If so, feel free to post a comment.

If you are worried about going over budget but are at the early stages of planning, we posted a blog on some areas which could help maximise your hard earned cash.

What is your biggest concern about getting married abroad?

In last week’s poll, we asked just that question.

22% said that they were worried that not everyone they wanted to be there would be. Factors like getting time off work, not being able to travel or even fear of flying would appear to be the most likely reasons affecting why not everyone asked could attend. I know from personal experience of a friend who wanted to get married in Italy, plans were dropped because the grandparents were unable to fly for health reasons, so I guess before going too far down the road of planning, asking the question to those near and dear first could save some heartache.

The vast majority, over 75% or ¾ said legal documents.

What the poll didn’t tell us was why?

I could make some broad based assumptions like the word ‘legal’ normally has an ‘unknown’ feel about it and when we don’t know something, we naturally get worried but what would be better, so those concerns are really addressed, so couples getting married feel more relaxed about this side of things is to maybe get a better feel for the emotional side.

If you have thoughts or experiences, which we can share and maybe put out as a message which couples can then identify with, please leave a post to this blog or email us direct at info@tlcuk.biz.

Furthermore, if you have got married abroad and would like to leave any words of wisdom or advice for others, please do comment or email us. We would love to hear from you and I’m sure those about to embark on their overseas wedding will do too.

This week’s poll – main reasons for getting married abroad? If you haven’t already, why not take part!

Getting married abroad: Cuban weddings

Cuba it is! Perfect location, ideal setting for that dream destination wedding.

Wedding package booked and the travel agent mentioned legal documents! What, when, how? It’s OK, it’s just the marriage documents needed to allow the wedding to proceed.

Cuba like many destinations has certain requirements and these will vary depending on certain situations namely you and your partners personal situation (i.e. both single, marrying for a second time etc).

You will require professional Spanish translation services.

The general advice is to check first with the travel agent on what documents for the wedding are needed. Believe it or not even within country, variations do exist!

Legal document checklist for getting married abroad

Which documents are needed will depend on the destination and the personal situation of both you and your partner (i.e. both single, divorced, widowed etc).

Documents need to be the originals but not all these are needed for every destination and in some cases just a passport will do!

The legal documents required will consist of the following:

  • Birth certificate/full birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Decree absolute
  • Previous marriage certificate (widowed)
  • Death certificate (widowed)
  • Adoption certificate
  • Change of name deed poll
  • Certificate of no impediment

In certain places (like Spain for example) there maybe residency issues to consider.

Can’t find the originals? It’s OK; you can obtain original copies from:

How to notarise a document: Notary public UK services

Like with many things in life until you need something, quite often you don’t know anything about it, where to look for it, what is does or how much it costs.

Several people we spoke too, who until they decided to get married abroad didn’t know what notaries did. So to help, we thought we would pencil down a few things to get people on their way.

What do they do:

A Notary is a person authorized to perform certain legal formalities, especially to draw up or certify contracts, deeds, and other documents for use in other jurisdictions. Also see: http://tlcuk.biz/support/frequently-asked-questions/faq-about-legalisation

Where to find one:

Whether you are looking for a notary public in Bristol or a notary public in London, you can always use TLC UK’s Notary register: http://tlcuk.biz/support/general-interest/uk-notaries

What is an apostille?

In short it’s an official certificate issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, authenticating a signature. Here’s a bit more: http://tlcuk.biz/support/frequently-asked-questions/faq-about-documents

How much does it cost?

You’ll have to speak directly with the Notary and prices will vary. If you are getting married abroad or looking to have business documents prepared for doing business abroad and notarisation is required, our prices will be bundled to include this service.

The whole process just follows a stepped plan to ensure your documents are country compliant.

Thinking about getting married abroad? You’re not alone!

Many newspaper pages are currently devoting headlines to statistics such as ‘More than a third of couples have booked a wedding abroad - a 15 per cent hike compared to figures for previous years.’

There is a simple, if not welcome reason for this. Statistics show that the average cost of a UK wedding has soared in recent years and is now close to hitting the £20K mark. This, together with the rising cost of living and pay freezes, means that engaged couples are looking further afield for wedding venues.

The cost savings of getting married abroad are significant; depending on your destination you can save as much as 50% in comparison to a UK based wedding. In these tough economic times, the maths is simple and the benefits of getting married abroad seem to add up too (being able to invite who you want, already being in your honeymoon destination, good weather…).

So, if like many other couples you are looking to get married abroad, don’t hesitate to get in touch with TLC UK . They have a dedicated team of experienced translators that can help you with the translation and legalisation of the documents you need for getting married abroad. They can also do the leg work for you by personally attending the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and any required embassy on your behalf!

Destination weddings: Easier than you think with minimal planning

There are some marry abroad destinations which have very short residency requirements, or in some locations none at all. For those spontaneous couples amongst you, it means you can literally step off the plane and get married should you wish! (providing you have the correct documentation with you, but don’t panic, help is at hand, more on that later…)

Destination weddings can be booked in a range of different countries from Antigua to Alaska, so there is a location to suit all tastes. Whether you want a winter wonderland wedding or a sandy shored extravaganza, you’re spoilt for choice!

Antigua has no residency requirements and you only need to have been in Alaska for one to three days prior to getting hitched. That gives you just about enough time to sample some of the local delicacies and double check that you have packed your thermals!

Just make sure you have the correct documentation with you to get married abroad. Don’t forget that TLC UK is here to help with the translation and legalisation of your documents. Let them take the stress out of getting married abroad. All you need to do, in most cases is to get in touch with them at least 3-6 months prior to your wedding and they will do the rest!
